Name actually John Thomas Myers

In 1887, Tom Turner played center field for Decatur; the Decatur paper indicated he came from the club at Paris, Illinois (Decatur Herald and Review, May 18, 1887). He signed with Peoria Reds for the 1888 season. After that club folded, he was signed by the Chicago Maroons in August along with Matt Keough and George Nulton. Initially he played right field, and then center field, and as the season wound down, he began pitching for the Maroons as well. He wound up pitching in six games, starting five, with a 1-4 record. Overall he played in 48 games for the Maroons, hitting .206 in 194 at-bats. He was reserved by the Maroons at the end of the season, and was transferred with the club to Minneapolis in 1889. In 1889, he bounced from Minneapolis to Denver and then back to Peoria.

Turner moved out west in 1890, as he was signed by John Barnes for the Spokane club in the new Pacific Northwest League. He remained with Spokane for the 1891 season as well. He hit 12 and 13 home runs in his two seasons there, earning the nickname "Home Run" Turner (Spokane Review, February 3, 1892, to go along with 60 doubles and 21 triples across the two seasons. After his two seasons with Spokane, he bounced around the rest of the decade before returning to Spokane in 1901 to manage the club and play first base. He was released from the job before the season even started. "Home Run Tom Turner is now ex-captain of the Spokane professional team... it is rumored that of late he has been imbibing of beverahes that make the eye less sure and the knees unable to carry the body around the bases with the speed necessary for a captain of a professional ball team" (Spokane Chronicle, April 15, 1901). He played with Seattle later in the summer. This proved to be his final season in professional baseball.

After his career ended, Turner stayed in the Pacific Northwest. In January 1915, the Spokane Review reported he was managing the bar at the Hotel Washington in Aberdeen, Washington. In 1926, the Spokane Chronicle noted he passed through town, coming from his home in Aberdeen. In the 1920 Census, he is listed as a watchman at a shipyard, married to Phyllis Turner. It also gives his birthplace as Illinois about 1868. Phyllis Turner died in 1928 in Aberdeen; she was the key to finding Tom Turner. The record of her death indicates her maiden name was Rasico. Phylis Rasico married John Thomas Myers in 1886 in Edgar, Illinois. Within a few years, he was playing baseball under the name Tom Turner. Why he changed his name is not know, but he was 21 and she was just 17 at the time they were married, so it may have been to hide from the parents. At various points during Tom's career, the wife is noted as being with him, so presumably she stayed with him in season.

Tom Turner (aka John Thomas Myers) was born February 13, 1866 (according to his FindAGrave entry). His marraige record from the state of Illinois lists his parents as Wesley and Sarah Myers. There is a second marriage license, dated February 6, 1906, filed in the state of Washington for J.T Myers (age 39) and Miss Phyllis Myers (age 37, of Paris, IL); they must have had a reason to have another legal record of their marriage. There apper to have been no children. After his career, they settled in Aberdeen, Washington, where she died in 1928. Tom Turner died Sepetmber 8, 1936 in Aberdeen. He is buried (as John Thomas Myers) in Sunset Memorial Park, in Hoquiam, Grays Harbor County, Washington.
