
The Pittsburgh club under Deacon Phillippe started practicing in late April. The timing of this photo is unclear. Some of the uniforms the players were probably those those worn by the Pittsburgh United States League club in 1912, as can be seen in the photos of Harry Johns and Henry Warren (below). Schreifer didn't arrive in camp until May 2, but two catchers who were with the club at the start of the season (Luchi and Porte) arrived in town the day before Schreifer, and yet were not in the photo. Finally, the names Freese and Gormley were only mentioned in connection with the club in the photo caption. These oddities make dating the photo difficult.

The uniform of the 1912 Pittsburgh club in the United States League
Henry Johns died of pneumonia on April 23, 1913. He was the main pitcher for the the Pittsburgh club in 1912, managed by Deacon Phillippe, and was reported to have been signed for the Federal League club for 1913. Henry Warren, from Punxsutawney, was an infielder with the Pittsburgh club the United States League in 1912 and the 1913 Federeal League club.
