About the St. Louis Player Database

The St. Louis Player Database is a reference site with information on major and minor league baseball players who have played in St. Louis or in the St. Louis farm system. It consists of two portions. The statistics database includes career stats for all players who have appeared in at least one major league game with the Cardinals or any of the other St. Louis major league franchises from 1871 to the present. It also includes minor league stats for all of the Cardinal farm clubs from about 1970 to the present.

The other portion of the database is the transactions database. This database includes transactions information of Cardinals major and minor leaguers going back to the start of the 20th century. For players before 1960, the data is scattered; much remains to be added (if I can find it). From 1960 onward it is relatively complete for most of the major leaguers. There are also some records for minor leaguers from the 1970s onward. For now, the transactions strictly relate to players connected in some way with the St. Louis Cardinals, but given the time I hope to add information about the other clubs as it is available (mainly for the Browns).

Both databases have been linked to provide as much information as I have available for a particular player. You can generate a record for a specific player, generate rosters for a specific team (by season) at both the major and minor league level, or generate a list of transactions for a specific year. I hope to add the capability to search of the transactions database by team or transaction type as well.

The data in this database comes from a wide range of sources. For most transactions before 1970, the primary source is the Baseball Encyclopedia. For most major leaguers after 1980, I have consulted the Sporting News Baseball Registers. Additional information has come from numerous online sources, including ESPN, USA Today, The Sporting News, the Baseball Almanac, and a really great site called MLB Roster Central (to which I will add a link here soon). When I have found conflicts, I have tried to use The Sporting News Baseball Registers as a consistant reference. However, I'm sure there are errors; if you find any, please let me know and if possible provide your source. I make no assurances that the information I provide is 100% accurate, but I have tried to be as consistant as possible given the range of sources I have used.

I hope you enjoy this resource as much as I enjoy compiling the information. There are still plenty of gaps in this record. Any assistance in providing missing information is greatly appreciated. The information I have compiled is all free to the user, but I ask that you not copy at wholesale and post it elsewhere. I will endevour to keep this database up-to-date and available to those who wish to access it.
